Even after the first weeks of school have come and gone, it’s not too late to schedule your child’s annual eye exam — and fall is actually one of the best times to do it.
Vision problems are one of the most common, and most overlooked, causes of struggling in the classroom. The American Optometric Association estimates that up to 1 in 4 school-age children has an undiagnosed vision problem, and kids rarely announce that they can’t see the board clearly. Instead, you might notice:
- Sitting unusually close to the TV or holding books close to the face
- Frequent headaches or eye rubbing after schoolwork
- Losing their place while reading, or avoiding reading altogether
- Squinting or tilting the head to see better
- Declining grades with no other obvious cause
A comprehensive eye exam checks far more than whether a child can read the letters on a chart. At Today’s Vision Las Colinas, we screen for focusing problems, eye teaming (how well the two eyes work together), and early signs of conditions like amblyopia (“lazy eye”) that are much easier to treat the earlier they’re caught.
The good news: most childhood vision problems are easily corrected with glasses, and kids often adjust to wearing them within days. If it’s been over a year since your child’s last exam — or they’ve never had one — now’s a great time to get it on the calendar before the school year gets busier.
